£2.8m To Be Invested In Greenock Water Infrastructure Upgrade

Construction News Image
Up to £2.8 million is being invested to upgrade waste water infrastructure and tackle flooding in Greenock town centre.

Amey Black and Veatch have started installing 47-metres of pipework to upgrade the existing sewer network, improve the water flow, and reduce the risk of flooding in the Oak Mall Shopping Centre and surrounding areas.

Stuart McMillan MSP and Ronnie Cowan MP visited the site last week at the Bullring Car Park to watch the first phase of work get underway on Monday, 12 January.

Project Manager Scott Henry said: "It's been great having Mr McMillan and Mr Cowan down on site, for them to get a feel for the project and the work it entails.

"Although we can't avoid some short-term disruption this project will, at the end of the day, benefit retailers and shoppers alike and minimise future disruption from flooding."

Mr McMillan said: "Flooding has been a problem for decades in Inverclyde and this £2.8m investment from Scottish Water is warmly welcomed.

"This investment, in addition to other flooding investments in recent years, will have a positive effect locally. It also shows the support Scottish Government agencies have for Inverclyde."

To carry out the scheme, the Bullring Car Park has been temporarily closed until the end of March 2018.

Scottish Water is planning the second phase of the project and will confirm the details of this in due course.
