Work to restore a war memorial in Prestonpans, East Lothian is now complete.

The scheme was carried out after Centenary Memorials Restoration Fund supported by Historic Environment Scotland and the Scottish Government provided a grant of £12,920 towards the works.

The Preston Seton Gosford Area Partnership also allocated funding which allowed the work to be carried out to repair and clean the stonework and erect a new set of railings.


The area around the railings has also been paved, while the soldier's nose has been repaired and the memorial (along with the Spanish Civil War Plaque) has been cleaned. Work was also carried out to sharpen the fallen soldiers names and carry out a correction to Sergeant James Herkes' name.

Preston Seton Gosford Area Partnership Chair, Ferhan Ashiq said: "“We are delighted to see the War Memorial back to its former glory and the quality of work from the Stonemason and Blacksmith has been exceptional.

"This is the first of two phases to be completed to upgrade Prestonpans civic square with the long term aim of breathing new life into our town centre."
