Work is continuing on a £250 million waste water network upgrade project across the Greater Glasgow area to tackle flooding and improve river water quality in the River Clyde and its tributaries.
A joint venture between Costain and Vinci (CVJV) is due to start installing a 55-metre stretch of new sewer in the south of Glasgow to increase capacity and substantially reduce the risk of flooding to nearby properties and roadway.
In previous years, four properties on Aikenhead Road have experienced internal flooding, while flooding has also occurred to the road and footpaths due to an issue with the capacity of the local waste water network..
For CVJV to carry out the scheme, a section of Aikenhead Road A728 from its junction with Prospecthill Road B768 to its junction with Curling Crescent in the Toryglen area of Glasgow will be closed for about five months from Monday, 08 January.
The work will involve major excavations and the use of a crane to lift some parts of the new infrastructure into place. Road diversions will be in place.
Ruaridh MacGregor, Scottish Water's Corporate Affairs Manager, said: "Our work in the Aikenhead Road area is key investment in the modernisation of the waste water network which will substantially reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
"This work cannot be done without the road closure. We appreciate that the work and road closure will cause some disruption and inconvenience to local residents, businesses and road users but we will do everything possible to minimise this.
"Once complete. this new infrastructure will benefit those directly and indirectly affected by the flooding for many years to come and we are sure the short-term disruption will be far outweighed by the long-term benefits that will be delivered."
The £250m investment includes the £100m Shieldhall Tunnel in the south of the city, also being built by CVJV, which will also help tackle the flooding issue in Aikenhead Road when it is commissioned in summer 2018.
