A public consultation is to be launched on design proposals for a new student centre at the University of Edinburgh.
Details of the building – to be situated at the heart of the central area campus – will be made public at the consultation event today Tuesday, 27 June.
Located between Bristo Square and George Square, the new centre will provide a dynamic environment for Edinburgh's student community.
Students, staff and the wider public are invited to attend the consultation, which will be held in the Dining Room at Teviot Row House from 2-8 pm.
The new building will be linked to an expansion and renovation of the existing Student Union facility at Teviot Row House.
It will bring together under one roof the University’s core student support functions, alongside those provided by the Students’ Association.
Students Association President, Patrick Kilduff, said: "We will work with the University to ensure students have the very best experience possible. We are particularly excited that this project is centred on Teviot Row House, the oldest purpose built Students’ Union in the world - its refurbishment and the adjacent development will ensure it remains fit to serve and support students as their needs evolve."
The centre will improve access to services that support student development, wellbeing and success - both inside and outside the classroom.
The project is being built and designed in consultation with Edinburgh’s Student Association.
Work is expected to begin in 2018 in advance of the centre opening in 2024.
Prof Sir Timothy O'Shea, Principal at the University, concluded: "This inviting, inspiring space will underpin our vision to deliver an outstanding student experience. It will create a home from home where students feel welcomed and inspired to achieve their full potential."
