Dundee Cycling And Walking Infrastructure To Receive Funding Boost

Construction News Image
Up to £203,000 is to be invested into upgrading cycling and walking infrastructure in Dundee.

The Scottish Government funding is being provided as part of the cycling, walking and safer streets initiative.

Last year, funding was used to install dropped kerbs throughout the city, introduce speed activated signs, footway works near Dalmahoy Drive and for various minor cycling and walking improvements. It also supported cycling schemes on Trades Lane and to provide solar studs along Coupar Angus Road.

A total of £40,000 has been allocated from the grant for lowered kerbs and footway improvements this year, along with £63,000 for pedestrian access and safety measures, £10,000 for outdoor access and £90,000 for cycling projects.

Lynne Short convener of the city council's city development committee, said: "Getting rid of the actual physical barriers as well as the ones that exist in people's heads so that they can get out and about is one of the vital things this money will do.

"So whether it’s improving footpaths, lowering kerbs, making existing pedestrian crossings better or putting in new ones what we are about is ensuring that Dundee is as easy as possible to get about in a healthy, sustainable way.

"The cycling strategy for the city expressed a number of ambitions that this money will also help to achieve including filling in some of the missing links in the network.

"It will make accessibility better for cyclists and look to tackle major barriers on the network such as providing safer routes across the Kingsway and at other locations."

Councillors will meet to discuss the funding at the city development committee on Monday. 26 June.
