Work is to begin on a £3.2 million city centre redevelopment project in Aberdeen.

The Broad Street scheme aims to transform and revitalise the street into an area capable of staging events throughout the year.

To allow building work at Marischal Square to begin, part of Broad Street is to close at 5am on Saturday, 18 March.

The project is part of the multi-million pound City Centre Masterplan and is expected to take several months to complete.


The design includes a water feature, trees and benches, improved lighting, and a raised grass area offering flexible event space in front of Marischal College. In addition, the traffic lights at Upperkirkgate and Gallowgate are to be removed and replaced with a shared surface for vehicles and a roundel – a mini-roundabout where pedestrians are given priority – while a Toucan crossing will be built at Union Street end.

Once finished, the new Broad Street will be pedestrian, cycle and bus only. The cost of the work is covered by the City Centre Masterplan budget, Marischal Square developer Muse, and Sustrans Scotland.

An Aberdeen City Council spokeswoman said: "Road users are advised to find alternative routes, and local diversions will be in place."
