Energy Action Scotland has awarded £100,000 towards developing energy efficiency measures for cancer patients in Shetland.
The grant funding includes improving insulation in the homes of cancer patients and fitting energy-efficient heating systems where needed.
Other features involve replacing boilers and giving energy advice to ensure that patients feel able to heat their homes adequately without worrying about excess costs. Householders can also replace broken or inefficient white goods or to receive these where they have none – for example, tumble dryers and freezers.
Shetland Islands Cllr, Michael Stout, said: "We're delighted to receive this funding. From personal experience, I know how important it is to make sure your home can be heated comfortably without being worried about the cost when a family member is ill. I would encourage families with a cancer diagnosis to contact the SIC's Energy Efficiency Helpdesk or the local Macmillan Nursing service as soon as possible to take part in the scheme."
Chief Executive of NHS Shetland, Ralph Roberts, added: "The funding award from Energy Action Scotland provides an excellent opportunity to improve the quality of life for cancer patients here in Shetland. By providing a grant of up to £9,000 per household it means that practical help and support is given directly to those living with cancer."
