CWA To Begin £11.3m Inverclyde Water Infrastructure Upgrade

Construction News Image
A joint venture between Morrison Utility Services and AECOM is to begin a £11.3 million water infrastructure upgrade in Inverclyde.

The Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) is working on behalf of Scottish Water to install seven miles of new water mains in the region, which will benefit thousands of households in parts of Inverclyde and Renfrewshire.

Around 3.5 miles of new water mains will be installed from the Whinhill Service Reservoir in Greenock to Dougliehill Service Reservoir. In addition, a new pumping station will be developed at Whinhill Service Reservoir to pump water to Dougliehill Service Reservoir.

A further 3.5 miles of mains will be installed from Dougliehill reservoir to Kilmacolm, which will tie in to the existing water mains in the village.

Other works include building a booster pumping station at Burnbrae near Quarrier's Village and decommissioning Kaim and Dougliehill WTWs in Lochwinnoch and Port Glasgow.

The project, which is expected to be completed in late 2017 or early 2018, will require some localised road closures to allow construction work to proceed safely. Traffic management and diversions will be in place.

Joanna Peebles, Scottish Water's regional communities manager, said: "Some customers served by the Kaim and Dougliehill water treatment works have occasionally experienced issues with the water quality.

"Our investment in 'maining out' to these supply zones from Greenock WTW, and taking Kaim and Dougliehill WTWs out of our supply network, will help ensure a supply of clear, fresh drinking water to these 18,000 customers for years to come."
