Fife Council has began a clean-up operation at a former gasholders site in Markinch.

The local authority is removing waste left by a gasworks operated in Northall Road Markinch until around the 1950s.

The site is now partially occupied by residential properties and the council is legally obliged to investigate former industrial sites to ensure there are no unacceptable risks to people and the environment.


The project is being carried out under the local authority's Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy and involves several thousand sites across Fife.

Kenny Bisset, Lead Officer (Land & Air Quality) said: "This short term work will involve removing and replacing soil which may result in occasional, short lived tar like odours however these will be appropriately managed to minimise any inconvenience to local residents.

"We'd like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience the temporary work may cause. We are looking to complete these works by this mid-December."
