New Primary School To Be Built In Midlothian

Proposals have been approved to build a new primary school in Midlothian.

The two-stream non-denominational school will be developed on the site of the former Hopefield Primary in Bonnyrigg.

The new school will be built to serve additional pupils coming from new housing in the area, including the Hopefield Farm development.

An informal consultation was undertaken with parents, communities and stakeholders on a range of possible options for primary school provision in Bonnyrigg, Lasswade and Rosewell in December/January.

In addition to building a new school, councillors have given their strong support to replace St Mary's Primary School. A feasibility study is set to be undertaken and a further report brought back to the council.

Midlothian Council said: "More details will emerge in the coming months as the feasibility study on St Mary's is completed and planning progresses for the Hopefield build.

"Further consultation on primary school provision in Bonnyrigg and Lasswade will be undertaken in due course."

It is expected the new Hopefield school will be open by autumn 2018.
