Sustrans has shortlisted five potential projects to improve the Milngavie area of East Dunbartonshire.
The sustainable transport charity selected the schemes as part of the Community Links Plus initiative.
The projects include building a safer roundabout in the Burnbrae area and continuing the Bears Way cycle way along arterial routes, including to Milngavie town centre precinct and the train station.
Sustrans' key criteria for shortlisted ideas included robust community engagement plans, high standards of design quality and innovation, deliverability and partnership work.
The final five proposals - which go through to Stage Three of Community Links Plus - will receive £35,000 for more detailed design work.
Councillor Alan Moir said: "We are delighted to be among the five Scottish projects shortlisted for Sustrans Community Links Plus funding - potentially paving the way for significant investment in the Milngavie area.
"It's tremendous news and I commend all the officers on their work to bring fresh investment to East Dunbartonshire at a time when the Council's finances are under extreme pressure.
"This is an outline concept proposal at the moment - suggesting a new roundabout design at Burnbrae and associated work on Bears Way - and any detailed plans will be subject to engagement with the community and stakeholders."
John Lauder, National Director, Sustrans Scotland, added: "These proposals are exemplary in their understanding of the need to improve our streets for the well-being of everyone. They bode well for the future of Scotland.".
