Planning consent has been submitted for a Premier Inn and restaurant scheme in Oban, it has been announced.

Proposals put forward by architects Lawrence McPherson Associaties (LMA) involves developing the 81-bed budget hotel and restaurant for Whitbread PLC on Shore Street.

Planning was submitted following an extensive period of pre-application discussions with Argyll and Bute Council.


Features include demolishing an existing bowling alley to make room for the new hotel, restaurant and associated parking.

The building has been designed with two frontages, one facing Shore Street and the other overlooking the bay.

LMA Architects said: "The Shore Street elevation is finished in a smooth white render usually associated with Scottish costal architecture with the rear clad in zinc extending from the roof. Grey timber cladding is used to emphasise the stair tower.

"The window openings are gathered vertically with full height windows and opaque spandrel panels with the dormers articulating the eaves and providing a focus at the top of the curtain walling. The restaurant sits as a glass box and framed by a folded canopy to bring a dynamic interest to the facade."
