Pupils at Dunbar Primary School in East Lothian recently took on the challenge to build a giant tetrahedron.
The project was part of a joint visit to the school by Clark Contracts, currently on site building a two storey, four classroom extension to the school and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
The school's primary 7 classes were given an introduction to construction by working together in this hands on session to complete the four metre high tetrahedron, sometimes known as a 'triangular pyramid'.
This enjoyable fun learning session develops teamwork, communications skills, analytical and reasoning skills, as well as developing knowledge of structures and basic geometry.
David Cooper, Director of the Clark Contracts Academy said: "It was fantastic to see the children working together as a team to construct the structure. I was impressed by their enthusiasm and eagerness to complete the task which was a challenge for the children and myself alike! I'm sure it has inspired a few of them to think further down the line about a career in one of the many roles in the construction industry."
Sharon Edgar, construction careers advisor at CITB, said: "This is a great example of the 'Curriculum for Excellence' in action! Working as one team, the primary 7 pupils produced an impressive structure which brought school subjects into a real live situation. By exploring the construction process they developed essential and valuable skills. Maths was exciting, they had fun and they felt extremely proud of their finished project, just like we do on completion."
Clark Contracts is scheduled to complete the extension to Dunbar Primary School in April 2016.
