Schools To Be Upgraded With £5.5m Improvement Project

West Dunbartonshire Council has announced schools across the region are being regenerated as part of a £5.5m improvement project.

The council has developed plans to refurbish ten primary schools in the first phase of a two stage project using funds announced earlier this year as part of the council's 2015/16 budget.

The first phase of work is now underway and will upgrade Levenvale, St Patrick's, Clydemuir, Carleith, Braehead, Whitecrook, Knoxland, Gavinburn, Linnvale and Gartocharn primaries.

Works will also take place to enhance fire safety at a number of other schools.

The project will involve electrical upgrades, window, door and roof replacements, external improvements and redecoration.

A total of £2.75m will be spent on this stage of the project.

On completion, the condition gradings of all ten schools will be improved from category C, showing defects, to condition B, satisfactory.

Plans for phase two of work in several other schools will be brought forward following a decision on whether to proceed with a proposal to create a new Alexandria educational campus incorporating two schools, a language unit and early learning centre.

Members of the Educational Services Committee will hear details of the £5.5m investment at a meeting on 2 September.

Terry Lanagan, Executive Director of Educational Services, said: "Our department wants to ensure all of our pupils are educated in the best possible environment for learning.

"The Council has built new schools and is regenerating others to ensure we provide facilities which can support 21st century learning."
