Further Work To Be Carried Out On A83

Transport Scotland has announced further work is to be carried out on the A83.

The work will investigate how the Old Military Road diversion route can be upgraded in the event of a landslide at the 'Rest and Be Thankful' viewpoint.

Transport Scotland will look at options to improve the general layout, access points and the operation and implementation of the diversion route should it be required.

The diversion route is part of a range of measures being progressed on the A83 under the 'Red Option' to help reduce the risk of impacts of landslides.

Along with the route, the A83 has seen the introduction of additional fencing and debris netting along with drainage and culvert improvements.

Transport Minister Derek Mackay said: "The A83 is a vital route for people in Argyll and Bute and the Scottish Government is firmly committed to mitigating the effects of landslides in the area.

"At the recent A83 Taskforce meeting, members agreed that improving the resilience of the Old Military Road would help maintain continuity of access in the long term and Transport Scotland will now take that work forward.

"Our mitigation measures are making a difference, with the netting and culverts successfully preventing debris from reaching the road."

Mr MacKay added a total of £48 million has been spent on the maintenance of the A83 since 2007.
