Scottish Borders Council has announced Phase Two of works on a flood protection scheme in Jedburgh is to get underway in September.
The second phase of the Skiprunning Burn Flood Protection Scheme includes:
• Work at the Larkhall Farm culvert to build up its resilience.
• A new debris trap at Wildcat Cleuch.
• Replacement of secondary trash screen to allow improved access for clearing.
• Replace primary trash screen at Burn Wynd with new angled screen, providing a greater area, and new hardstanding for easier clearing.
• Creation of a new overflow bypass culvert.
• Widening the burn on approach to main culvert inlet and provide concrete walls to retain the ground.
• CCTV monitoring of the inlet screen and ultrasonic measurement of new screen.
The first phase was completed in March last year.
Local firm JMS Harkin carried out four weeks of work which saw improvements made to the grille at Burn Wynd and creation of a flood relief drain at Duck Row.
Following discussions with councillors in Jedburgh, further works were taken forwards as Phase One:A in advance of Phase Two.
Works included:
• Replacing the boundary fence at the fire station.
• Frainage improvements at the Canongate.
• Extending planters at Market Square and Canongate.
An agreement has been reached between residents, housing associations and the Council to fit flood resilient doors to the most vulnerable houses.
This will remove the need for property owners to fit floodgates every time there is a threat of flooding.
These works will be carried out in advance of Phase Two.
Councillor Gordon Edgar said: "I am pleased to see the work which has already been carried out to reduce the risk of flooding from the Skiprunning Burn, with the introduction of flood resilient doors giving added protection to the properties which have previously been badly affected by flooding in the town."
