The new South Glasgow University Hospital campus is expected to be officially handed over to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, according to the BBC.

The campus, which has cost more than £800m, will be able to cater for more than 1,300 patients.

Construction work commenced on site in early 2011 and is said to be Scotland's largest hospital, combining children's, maternity and adult hospitals on the campus. It is anticipated the facility will open in May 2015.


The hospital has been built on the site of the existing Southern General Hospital and replaces the Southern General Hospital, Western and Victoria Infirmaries, Mansionhouse Unit and Royal Hospital for Sick Children at Yorkhill. Brookfield Multiplex, the building contractors for the scheme, have said the site comprises of a new acute care hospital with 1,109 beds in single-room accommodation; 256-bed children's hospital and 30 modern operating theatres. There is also a separate laboratory block providing biochemistry, haematology and blood transfusion services, plus a stand-alone Energy Centre and a landing pad on the hospital roof for rescue helicopters.
