New Site For Inverclyde's Central Library

The Central Library in Inverclyde is to relocate to a new refurbished site at Wallace Place in the town, it has been announced.

To allow for the transition to take place, the existing library at Cathcart Street will close tomorrow (24 January), and reopen on Thursday 29 January at its new venue.

The new fully refurbished library includes bright furniture and fittings, including new reading 'Cocoons'; a bespoke children's section, including iPads, comfortable seating and special reading areas; designated reading and study space; iPad kiosks for searching the library catalogue and managing your account; free Wi-Fi; a soft seating area and a hot drinks machine. In addition, the children's area will have comfortable seating and space for families to relax and read in a safe and friendly environment.

Teenager users of the library will also have their own section and can use the special study areas and reading 'cocoons'. A flexible Learning Centre, with 14 desktop computers, will also be created and will be an enhanced space with comfortable seating and a state-of-the-art mobile smartboard.

Councillor Terry Loughran, Education Convener, said: "Many people may not know the history which connects the Central Library to this remarkable building – that it was in fact once used as a free public library from 1902 until the opening of the central library in Clyde Square in 1965.

"We're delighted to see the Central Library return to its former home in all its glory refurbished with all the modern technology and design, giving children and adults across Inverclyde a new community hub to be proud of."
