Repairs are continuing to progress at Dura Den in Fife.

The C45 road which goes through Dura Den has been closed since October 2012 after flooding caused the retaining walls supporting the road to collapse. Private properties in the area were also damaged by the flooding.

Work to construct a new retaining wall commenced last week. George Leslie Ltd, the appointed contractor for the scheme, installed the first of 105 bored piles to stabilise the road and protect it from further slippage. Each reinforced concrete pile is 2 feet in diameter and embedded into the sandstone bedrock at depths of up to 36 feet. These piles will then be faced with stone masonry to form the new retaining walls.


It is thought the total cost of the project, which also includes improvements to drainage and the reinstatement of the road, is around £1.4m. The work will take around six months to complete.

Councillor Pat Callaghan, Executive Spokesperson for Environment and Transportation, said: "In December [2014] the contractor began with ground preparation works. This month, I'm delighted to see work starting on the new retaining wall. Once again, I thank local residents for their patience and ask for their continued support during the works."
