Works are to begin at the Foregate North car park in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire.
The improvement works will begin next week (19 January), and are part of a wider scheme in the town. A scheduled completion date of the end of March has been given.
At the car park, the project will involve practical improvements such as a new pavement around the perimeter of the car park, an improved pedestrian crossing to the Foregate, improvements to the car park itself and new parking bays for larger vehicles. An electric vehicle charging point will also be installed as well as motorbike and cycle stands.
Managed by the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, the works will be carried out by McGivney Construction Ltd of Fenwick.
In order to allow works to commence, the car park will close.
Councillor Jim Buchanan, spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration, said: "Throughout Kilmarnock town centre huge improvements have been made to the built environment. The historic heart of the town at Bank Street and John Finnie Street are being completely transformed with investment in our buildings but also through environmental improvements with new lighting and paths greatly enhancing the look of the town.
"At the Foregate this integrated approach will continue. We are making practical changes to the car park, improving both vehicle and pedestrian access to the Foregate area of the town, as well as addressing environmental issues. Trees will be planted to improve the look of this area, new lighting will be installed and the paths will be built using attractive natural stone.
"These improvement works will transform the north of Kilmarnock and enhance the offer for local people, visitors to the town and most importantly our businesses."
