Names Sought For Waterfront Streets

Dundee Council has said it wants to hear from the community regarding new street names for the Dundee Waterfront area.

The local authority has today (12 January) released a list of proposed names for some of the streets, and they commemorate the city's seafaring history.

For example, names put forward include:

• Thomson Avenue. This would commemorate James Thomson who was city architect between 1906 and 1924. During his tenure, the Kingsway was built, while he also suggested a master plan for the waterfront.

• Earl Grey Place (East and West). These have been named to retain the link between the area and the former dock built in 1834.

• Patent Slip Way. This runs beneath the Tay Road Bridge ramps, and recognises the track and cradle used to transfer a vessel from the river to the dock for repairs.

Commenting on the suggestions, Lord Provost Bob Duncan said: "There is a long established and legal process for naming new streets and we are launching that process today.

"Local councillors, the convener of the city development committee and any community representative bodies have four weeks to respond to our proposals for the street names before they are finally decided by the City Development Committee.

"I think that the proposed names strike a balance between logic and creativity while also paying homage to a visionary city planner from the 20th century in a scheme designed for the 21st and beyond."

In addition to the above suggestions, the council is also calling on the local community to submit their suggestions for two further streets. The streets in question involve two of the major open spaces in the £1bn development. They are the new central square, and the new public space, located outside the railway station.

Ideas could include famous names or events associated with Dundee, but names of those still living will not be considered; historical references to the area or names reflecting the redevelopment of the Waterfront.

Suggestions can be made via the Dundee City Council website here.

The deadline for submissions is 6 February 2015.
