Cornerstone, a charity which provides services for adults and children with learning disabilities in Scotland, has confirmed it is to renovate a building in West Dunbartonshire.
The announcement comes after the charity negotiated the purchase of the property. The centre, located in Renton, closed a number of months ago but will now be restored and act as Cornerstone's new administrative base. Around 20 staff members will be relocated from its Clydebank base to the new premises upon completion.
The centre will also become home to a new Connects service, which aims to build friendships and community connections, as well as partnerships to support, sustain and integrate local communities and vulnerable groups.
The building, which has multiple spaces, will include a large catering kitchen and will be made available to other community groups to lease.
The charity has said it will hold a consultation event in January and will give the local community an opportunity to view the building, as well as give their views as to the types of activities that are needed in the area.
Hazel Brown, Cornerstone's West Regional Director, said the new location is ideal for the charity.
She said: "We are delighted to be able to base all our West Dunbartonshire services out of the Carman Centre from early next year.
"The Centre offers a real opportunity to provide activities, including training and learning opportunities, to the people we support as well as providing a hub for the local community, of which many of our staff and people we support are already part.
"With the acquisition of the Carman Centre and the recent opening of Baxter View, our newly built housing support service, this is a great time to be part of Cornerstone."
Jim Bollan, a local Councillor, added: "Cornerstone already provide services in the local community of Renton, and I am very pleased that they were able to take on the Carman Centre. Renton is very much in need of additional services so this new development by Cornerstone for the Village is welcome and very exciting."
