An information event was recently organised by Scottish Water to update the local community in Shawhead about the Killylour Water Treatment Works.

The utility provider has constructed a new water treatment facility in the area in order to meet the needs of customers. Built alongside the old Killylour water treatment works, the service has recently undergone a testing programme.

Around 8.5 mega litres is being produced by the new facilities, almost double that of the former works, but while the testing programme revealed that a high standard of drinking water is being provided for customers, it also found that in order to provide this additional volume of water, a pre-treatment facility needs to be installed.


Scottish Water has said this will be created in a new build on the current site. A design for the facility is currently taking place and a planning application is expected to be submitted to Dumfries and Galloway Council within the next few months.

Bill Elliot, Community Team Manager for Dumfries and Galloway, said: "We are currently finalising the design of this pre-treatment facility and will present these plans at a further information event in Shawhead before submitting to the planning authority for approval."
