Revised plans to redevelop Glasgow's Buchanan Galleries shopping centre have been submitted to the local authority by BDP.
In its design statement, the company has said the vision for the £300m project is to "build on the success of the existing Buchanan Galleries and create a new Buchanan Quarter which would act as a catalyst for regeneration and form a legacy for the retail future of this part of the city."
The revised plans have been divided into five main components; they are the existing Buchanan Galleries, a southern extension, a new leisure and retail extension which would be located above the current north cutting, a 1,700-space car park located to the east of Queen Street Station, and a new 'Rotunda' at Buchanan Street.
The circular rotunda at the head of Buchanan Street has been changed to include a rooftop view point, while the existing steps would be removed to improve access. It would also open up the roof level catering space for restaurants. The new leisure and retail extension would take the form of a four-storey development to be constructed above the current station and capped by a 10-screen multiplex cinema. This would connect to the car park, via a glass link bridge, BDP has said.
Elsewhere, public realm improvements have also been included in the scheme, with a new arrivals square proposed for Queen Street Station, while an A-listed bridge at Cathedral Street would be remodelled to accommodate a retail unit and multi-storey car park. Iron balustrades would be retained along the majority of the bridge, and flanked by a structural arch to reflect the curves of the station located underneath.
Initially, construction work was due to start this year with a scheduled completion date provided of 2017.
