Dumfries and Galloway Council has confirmed the conservation area in Stranraer has been updated.

The most recent plans now include Agnew Park, the Waterfront to the north and Hanover Street to the east.

The decision will mean more of the town's history, such as the environment, will be preserved for future generations.

In a statement, the local authority said that as a result of the conservation area, planning applications for any development that could affect the character of the area are to be advertised in the local press. In addition, trees cannot be felled or lopped without prior written consent from the Council, while demolitions on buildings will also be controlled. Other aspects include needing permission to undertake minor works in the conservation area, such as altering doors or windows in dwelling houses, changing roofing materials, cladding or painting buildings, as well as the erection of satellite dishes.


Councillor Colin Smyth, Chair of the Council's Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, welcomed the announcement. He said: "It is very important that we protect the historic character of Stranraer for future generations."

He added that the local community should visit the Council website to see if their home falls within the conservation area, and if so, they can seek advice from planning services.
