Two projects to improve the waste water infrastructure have been completed in East Kilbride.

The first scheme involved a £4.3m refurbishment of Allers Waste Water Treatment Works. Serving customers in the east of the town and the surrounding area, new and modern equipment has been installed at the facility. The capacity of the works has also been increased to allow more waste water to be processed from local homes and businesses.

The second project was a £1.7m pumping station at Thorntonhall. This replaced an older facility that served the local area. The pumping station is used to pump waste water from local homes onwards for treatment at Philipshill Waste Water Treatment Works, before being returned safely to the environment.


As part of the works, new control panels have been installed so that, in the event of very heavy rainfall, the pumping station will be equipped to process an increased volume of water.

Commenting on the schemes, Bill Elliot, Scottish Water's Community Team Manager for South Lanarkshire, said: "The investment at Allers and Thorntonhall which Scottish Water has made in South Lanarkshire demonstrates our continued commitment to provide our customers with the very best waste water service. It will help us protect and enhance the environment of the East Kilbride area."
