Asbestos Test Results 'Reassuring' - Council

West Dunbartonshire Council has said it has received new information regarding the discovery of asbestos on the site of the former St Eunan's Primary School last month.

The discovery was made in September by independent contractors who were carrying out site investigations with a view to market the vacant site for development. They completed their investigations and determined that there is no "significant risk" to local residents or to those who have previously accessed the site.

In a separate investigation, West Dunbartonshire Council instructed an independent analyst to conduct reassurance air monitoring. Results were collected from four separate locations on the site, and found that the airborne asbestos fiber counts fell well within safe levels.

Air tests will be repeated weekly for the next three weeks the local authority has said, with residents nearby being informed of the results.

Furthermore, an asbestos contractor has now been hired to carry out a detailed inspection of the site and remove any asbestos. Warning signs have also been erected around the site and a fence has been repaired to keep people out.

The origin of the asbestos is still being investigated.

Councillor Patrick McGlinchey, Convener of Infrastructure and Regeneration, said: "Although these results are very reassuring, we would stress that people should continue to keep out of the site as there could still be asbestos on the ground. We will continue to monitor the situation and keep residents fully informed."
