New Civic Square For Shawlands Proposed

A proposal to create a new civic space in the Shawlands area is to be put to public consultation, it has been announced.

If approved, the civic space would be created close to Langside Hall.

In 2012, the Shawlands Town Centre Action Plan was launched which has involved Glasgow City Council, Shawlands & Strathbungo Community Council and Shawlands Business Association working together to deliver £3.3m of improvements in the area.

While a number of developments have already been delivered, such as the 'Shawlands Gate' – an outdoor digital animation studio developed in collaboration with the students at Shawlands Academy – and the designation of Shawlands Cross Conservation Area, the Town Centre Action Plan is now proposing that a new civic square should be created and help form the heart of the emerging cultural quarter of Shawlands.

The space could also help attract more visitors to the area, as well as be a potential stopping point to and from the city centre and for those on route to Scotland's national football stadium at Hampden.

The local community is now being asked to share their views on the proposal and the design of the square.

The public events will be held at:

• Langside Hall from 10am to 8pm on 24 September

• Langside Hall from 10am to 6pm on 4 October.
