Redevelopment Of Cockenzie Power Station Proposed

East Lothian Council has confirmed it is looking at the opportunities available if Cockenzie Power Station was to be redeveloped.

The benefits of such a project, in relation to both the creation of new jobs in the area and to the local economy as a whole, were discussed at a council meeting on Tuesday (26 August).

As a result, the local authority has said it will work alongside key players and communities to ensure all potential opportunities and benefits are explored and maximised, and to ensure that any concerns, issues or risks are identified and considered.

If any applications are submitted, the Council has said they will need to "fully adhere" to planning and other consenting processes, such as environmental impact assessment work and full, continuous and informed consultation with local communities.

Councillor John McMillan, East Lothian Council's spokesperson on Economic Development, said: "It's obviously early days and we will have to await the outcome of the planning process, an important part of which is full, continuous and informed consultation with local communities by prospective applicants.

"However, if the application does go through, it's very important that the council is ready to work with Scottish Enterprise to maximise the benefits for the East Lothian jobs market and economy.

"Our population is expanding rapidly and our Economic Development Team will make the most of all opportunities that emerge to grow a sustainable economy so that we will build skills, develop trade opportunities and create jobs whenever and wherever we can."
