A number of improvement works being carried out in Kirkintilloch have resulted in the town centre's public square being transformed.

The work has been undertaken at Barleybank and has seen the delivery of an open square, new boat-themed seating and a decked area which overlooks the canal. Work to increase the accessibility of the canal towpath has also been successful.


Officially opening the new square, East Dunbartonshire Council Leader, Councillor Rhondda Geekie, said: "I am delighted to officially open the new square at Barleybank – it's a wonderful project which has created seating, landscaping and better access to the canal, as well as a decked area looking over the waterway.

"It has been very exciting to see the development take shape at Barleybank and it now offers a great public space for small events."

The works are part of the wider Kirkintilloch Town Centre Masterplan, which aims to create "a reinvigorated heart for Kirkintilloch that is vibrant, welcoming and attractive" and provide a mix of business, civic, leisure, retail and tourism facilities.
