Access to the historic Mavisbank House in Loanhead, Midlothian, has been made significantly easier following a recent transformation project.
Named as one of Scotland's most important historic buildings, the grounds of Mavisbank House have been difficult to access due to the condition of the landscape. However, an improvement project has recently been completed, with new gate access and a path being created. The initiative links the upper section of the south drive and the House.
In addition, it is understood Historic Scotland and Midlothian Council are looking at plans to seek funding to conserve Mavisbank House and open up the grounds.
Opening the new pathway, Councillor Owen Thompson, Leader of Midlothian Council, said: "It's fantastic to see this work completed and I'm delighted to be opening the Mavisbank Trust pathway, as it will allow greater public access to one of Midlothian's beautiful historic landmarks.
"We are delighted to be working in partnership with Historic Scotland and Mavisbank House on this exciting project to conserve this very special area in Loanhead. Improvements like these not only benefit the local community but open up our area to visitors and tourists and that can only be a good thing."
Willie Macnair, Chair of the Mavisbank Trust, added: "The opening of the path is a proud moment for the Mavisbank Trust and we continue to work with our partners and the community to open up the grounds for the benefit of all while treasuring its essential character."
Mavisbank House was constructed between 1723 and 1736. It has lain derelict since 1973 when it was destroyed by a fire.
