A new five-bedroom purpose-built residential unit for young people has opened in Wick.

Known as Avonlea, the facility on West Banks Avenue, will replace the former Northcote Street unit which is no longer fit for purpose. The home will see council staff provide 24-hour care for five children, aged 12 to 16 years old, and now includes five bedrooms with en-suite facilities for the young residents, a large living room, dining room, kitchen with separate utility room, a quiet room, a family room, staff accommodation and an office area.


Avonlea was designed in-house by the Council's Wick-based architect Claire MacKenzie, while Macgregor's Construction was appointed to carry out the build.

Commenting on the project, Tracey Taylor, Unit Manager, said: "There has been a lot of hard work and effort to get Avonlea right for the residents and it is rewarding to see the happiness of the young people and staff in their new home. Heartfelt thanks to all who have been involved in the process."

Gail Ross, Caithness Civic Leader and local Councillor, added: "The staff at the Wick Children's Centre always provided good support to the children who lived there. This new building provides a high quality environment, allowing the staff to provide even better care. I am sure both the children and the staff will enjoy their new home."
