£2.2m Cycling Investment For Fife

Some £2.2m is to be invested in cycling infrastructure and training in Glenrothes, Fife, over the next two years, the Council has confirmed.

On Thursday, a report was published outlining the project for the town. It includes:

• Improving existing cycle routes

• Creating traffic free cycling routes

• Cycle routes linking up the town centre with parks and leisure centres

• Free cycle training

• Providing pathways to affordable bikes

• More cycle racks.

Earlier this year, Fife Council was awarded £2.4m from Transport Scotland through Sustrans' Community Link Programmes. The Council and other partners will match this investment, meaning just under £5m will be invested in Fife for cycling development.

Welcoming the news, Councillor Altany Craik, Chair of Glenrothes Area Committee said: "This is great news for Glenrothes; it will make a real difference to our area. I encourage as many people as possible to get involved with this cycling project and reap the rewards of a healthier lifestyle."

Councillor Pat Callaghan, Fife Council's Executive Spokesperson for Environment and Transportation, added: "Over the next two years nearly £5m will be invested in cycling projects for Fife.

"Fife Council has been at the forefront of encouraging people to cycle for over 20 years. We've over 350 miles of cycleways, many 20mph residential zones and we are continually encouraging people to cycle more."
