Hampden Park Transformation Unveiled

A reveal of the new world-class athletics arena, Hampden Park, has taken place in Glasgow.

Shona Robison, the Cabinet Secretary for Commonwealth Games and Sport, was in attendance.

The venue has undergone an ambitious transformation ahead of this year's Commonwealth Games, which are to be held in the city. Over seven days, more than 48 events will be held with more than 1,000 athletes taking part in the competitions.

Commenting on the reveal, Shona Robison said: "This new athletics track is truly fantastic and another excellent example of how ready we are for these Games. This completes an amazing transformation of Hampden Park.

"It is very exciting to have Team Scotland athlete Eilish McColgan here today to mark the occasion. I'm very much looking forward to seeing her in action on the Hampden track and adding to the Team Scotland medal haul.

"I am also very pleased that there is work ongoing to ensure that the running tracks will be relocated after the Games providing a valuable legacy and, hopefully, encouraging many more future Scottish athletes."

Under the works, the stadium's surface was raised almost two metres to give it the width and length needed for an athletics track, while eight rows of seats were also removed to accommodate the track. Elsewhere, an infield –complete with freshly-cut grass – has been located on a temporary deck made up of 1,000 base panels and supported by more than 6,000 steel stilts.
