Council To Demolish Two Housing Complexes

Construction News Image
East Dunbartonshire Council is to demolish two outdated housing complexes, to make way for much-needed modern affordable housing.

At a meeting of the Neighbourhood Services Committee councillors voted that 24 flats in Twechar, as well as six prefabricated units at Keystone Avenue, Milngavie, should be demolished.

In Twechar the removal of the remaining flats at 3-20 Windy Yetts and 7-10 Sunnyhill will complete the demolition programme of the former 'coal board scheme' homes. Over the last few years, East Dunbartonshire Council has been moving tenants out of the properties in preparation for the demolition and new build programme and the remaining four tenants will be moved into one of the new homes built by Places for People during the summer. It is proposed that the redevelopment of this part of the site will begin at the end of this year, delivering a mix of housing for sale and rent.

The other council homes set to be demolished are the six prefabricated units at Keystone Avenue, Milngavie. The units were purchased in 1995 by Bearsden Borough Council to use for decanting tenants during a modernisation programme. Over the last 15 years they have been used as temporary accommodation for homeless people, but over the past year they have become unfit for use and have fallen into disrepair. It is hoped the cleared site will be used for a new Council house development.

Councillor Ashay Ghai, depute leader of the Council and convenor of Neighbourhood Services, said: "These sites have served tenants well over the years but have now come to the end of their useful lives. I am very pleased the two areas will now be cleared to make way for future development and much needed Council housing. It's the end of an era in one respect, but an exciting beginning too, which will bring regeneration to Twechar and this area of Milngavie."
