West Dunbartonshire Council has unveiled plans to create a new road and footpath in Dumbarton town centre.
The local authority has said the project could assist the future regeneration of the area.
It is understood the Council has already secured funding for the scheme. This would see the current three-way junction next to McDonald's restaurant at Glasgow Road altered into a four-way junction with a new exit being provided into Castle Street into the High Street.
The plans also include the creation of an enhanced pedestrian route between the town centre and St. James Retail Park, plus new car parking spaces, lighting and street furniture.
The project will also improve access to the Dumbarton Waterfront and High Street, one of the area's major regeneration sites, and could lead to further development in and around the town centre.
Councillor David McBride, Convener of Economic Development, said: "This proposal is a significant step in moving forward with unlocking Dumbarton Waterfront. I'm grateful for the partnership support from SPT and if this project is approved by the planning committee later this year, it will be a great boost to the prospects of the town centre and the waterfront."
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is donating towards part of the £1.5m estimated cost, with West Dunbartonshire Council meeting the existing costs.
The project drawings will be on display in Dumbarton Library until Monday 21 April.
