A number of walls have been cordoned off in Edinburgh schools as a result of structural checks being carried out.

The checks were undertaken after a 12-year-old girl, named as Keane Wallis-Bennett, was killed at Liberton High School in the city when a free-standing wall collapsed on her on Tuesday.

Following the structural checks, nine similar walls have been identified in changing rooms and toilets at Leith Academy and Castlebrae School, as well as a number in a further 11 primary schools.


Council officials have said no concerns have been raised with the structure of any of the walls, but some have been cordoned off as a precaution. The local authority will use the Easter holiday period to determine if any further action is required.

Chief Executive, Sue Bruce, said: "This has been a dreadful incident and my deepest sympathies, and those of my colleagues, are with the family and friends of Keane.

"The Council has taken immediate action and we are determined to provide reassurance to parents, pupils and the people of Edinburgh that we will do everything in our power to prevent anything like this happening again.

"I have been in regular contact with the Scottish Government and have highlighted to them the course of action we are taking."
