East Ayrshire Council has outlined its traffic, transport and road safety programmes for the year ahead.
The plans, which include road safety schemes, lower speed limits, and strategic route improvements, will benefit communities across the area, the local authority has said.
It was agreed that £675,000 from the Capital budget would be allocated to refurbish the A71 Moorfield roundabout. This includes resurfacing, anti-skid surfacing and improved signage and lining. The approaches to the roundabout will also be surveyed to ensure they meet current design standards.
In addition to more than £1m set aside by the Council for roads improvements over the next year, funding has been received from the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport which will allow work to progress on the road realignment scheme at Glenbuck on the A70, in response to community requests for dropped kerbs for vulnerable road users. The bus infrastructure will also be improved and include new bus shelters and raised height boarding kerbs.
Scottish Government funding has been allocated towards improving facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and vulnerable roads users, like children travelling to and from school.
Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration said: "Design work has been progressing well on an extension of the Sir Chris Hoy Way cycle way from the west end of Galston to extend the cycle route to Newmilns.
"A bid has been submitted to SUSTRANS and a funding announcement will be made shortly which will allow the Council to complete work on this project.
"A bid has also been submitted, in partnership with South Ayrshire Council, for a cycle route from Dundonald to the N73 at Kilmarnock via Gatehead, Laigh Milton Viaduct and Crosshouse. This will be brilliant news for local communities who make great use of our existing cycle paths."
