£73m School Campus Plans Unveiled

Construction News Image
It has been announced that four new multi-million pound school campuses could be built in North Lanarkshire.

The proposals for Airdrie, Coatbridge and Motherwell, were approved by the Council on Monday (3 March) and are part of a £73m initiative to improve school facilities for pupils and staff in the areas.

The plans will now go out for consultation.

In Airdrie, the plans are to amalgamate St Dominic's and St Edward's schools with a new primary school on Craigneuk Playing Fields. Earlier this week, however, the scheme was amended to include Tollbrae Primary School in the merger.

Also in the town, there are plans to amalgamate the Dunrobin and Petersburn primary schools in a joint campus.

For Coatbridge, the local authority has said a consultation is to be carried out into a potential merger of Carnbroe and Sikeside primary schools, as well as St Stephen's Primary. A new school campus would subsequently be constructed on land adjacent to Calder Community Centre. Lastly, in Motherwell, there are plans to amalgamate Taylor High School and Our Lady's High School, which would also incorporate a joint campus with a newly-built Bothwellpark (Additional Support Needs) High School on Ravenscraig.

Commenting on the proposals, Councillor Jim Logue, said: "Since 2006, this council has invested over half a billion pounds creating 38 new schools and nurseries and a further ten community facilities including new libraries, sports facilities and culture venues.

"Each new school and community campus has made a major impact on the communities they serve. We've experienced better attendances, better results and better working conditions for pupils and staff alike.

"In addition the fantastic new facilities have been enjoyed by a wide range of people in the evenings and at weekends."

The above proposals are included in Phase 2 of North Lanarkshire Council's Schools and Centres 21 project.

Anyone interested in the proposals have until Friday 2 May 2014 to take part in the consultation.
