The ScottishPower Foundation, in partnership with its Spanish equivalent Fundacion IBERDROLA, has announced 17 new post-graduate scholarship grants for the 2014/15 academic year.
The scholarships aim to contribute to the education of young professionals with the capabilities required to lead the energy industry in the future.
Applications for the forthcoming academic year are now open, and will close on Thursday 3 April.
The agreement between the two organisations will see more than £1.65m invested in research and education programmes between the UK and Spain with scholarships seeking to promote excellence in education in the area of energy.
Special emphasis has been given to the development of renewable energy sources, the enhancement of biodiversity and improving the efficiency of the energy system.
Ann Loughrey, Trustee and Executive Officer at the ScottishPower Foundation, said: "The partnership between the ScottishPower Foundation and Fundacion IBERDROLA helps continue the development of the UK's future industry leaders at five leading Universities.
"Today's announcement further demonstrates our long term investment in skills and education and encourages emerging talent at the highest level."
The grants are available to those who wish to study towards qualifications in energy and environment-related studies such as renewable energies, sustainable energy systems, environment and biodiversity, clean coal technologies, emissions management, energy efficiency, energy storage, electric vehicles and smart grids.
It covers full enrolment costs as well as an additional living allowance of £1,200 per month.
The places are available at five of the UK's universities; the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, University of Liverpool, University of Strathclyde, and Imperial College London.
