Alexandria Improvements Enters Final Phase

The final phase of a £770,000 project which will transform Alexandria town centre is now underway.

Under the project, the entrance to Mitchell Way, adjacent to Main Street, is being redesigned to improve links between the two shopping areas and will create a welcoming public space for visitors. The space will also incorporate a public art feature, new lighting, new seating and landscaping.

West Dunbartonshire Council has said the works are due to be completed by the end of March 2014, but as a result, there will be reduced access between Main Street and Mitchell Way until then. They added that there may be times when it will be necessary for the contractor – WH Kirkwood – to close sections of footpath.

Elsewhere, the stairs adjacent to the Co-op foodstore will remain open but it will not be possible to accommodate ramped access between Main Street and Mitchell Way for the duration of the works. A temporary alternative route will be in place for wheelchair and mobility scooter users as well as those with prams and buggies. This will be signposted from Main Street guiding people to the access into Mitchell Way.

Councillor David McBride, Convener of Economic Development, said: "This £770,000 investment in Alexandria is creating a vibrant shopping area which is attractive to residents, visitors and retailers and fit for the future.

"We now require the continued patience of residents and retailers as the final stage of the project is completed."

The first two phases of the refurbishment project involved removing dated canopies, installing new lighting, shutters and signage and carrying out essential repairs.
