Approval For Climate Change Programme

Construction News Image
Fife Council's Executive Committee has heard proposals to tackle the effects of climate change. In turn, the committee approved plans for the Climate Change Programme.

Already in the area, projects are being carried out to protect local communities from flooding and to improve the durability of transportation networks.

In Dunfermline, for example, a flood prevention scheme is almost complete, and the project will reduce the risk of flooding at vulnerable locations within the south-west of the region.

Also in the meeting, members of the committee agreed that the Climate Change capital budget should fund urgent remedial work needed at Pittenweem Harbour, Dura Den and various retaining wall collapses throughout Fife. They also approved initiating feasibility studies to look at the next generation of flood prevention and coast protection projects.

Executive Spokesperson for Transportation and Environment, Councillor Pat Callaghan said: "Addressing the impacts of climate change are a key priority for us; we need to take steps now to protect our communities for the future.

"Due to the increasing effects of storm damage there are now a number of areas with severe infrastructure deterioration. Through our Climate Change budget we area able to begin remedial works on these high priority areas."
