Renewable Energy Developer RES has submitted an application for Cairn Duhie Wind Farm, on land south-east of Ferness.
If approved, the project would have an installed capacity of around 50-60MW, depending on the final turbine selection.
The application has been submitted under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 to the Scottish Government's Energy Consents and Deployment Unit.

The submission follows an extensive period of consultation, led by RES, which included a series of public exhibitions in September, as well as meetings with representatives of the local community councils and residents associations.
Fiona Stevens, RES Project Manager, said: "We would like to thank everyone who has taken part in the consultation process and provided RES with their comments on our proposal. RES has completed extensive environmental surveys at the site and we are confident it is an ideal location for a wind farm. We have sensitively designed Cairn Duhie Wind Farm to minimise local impacts whilst maximising renewable energy generation."
The company said the scheme could generate enough electricity for up to 32,000 homes and a community benefits package of £250,000-a-year.
