Scottish Water is improving the natural environment on a river in the Corkerhill area of Glasgow by upgrading its waste water infrastructure.

Contractors working for the firm are undertaking a project that will improve the water in the White Carter Water – which flows into the River Clyde.

The £1.1m investment is part of Scottish Water's £250m five-year programme of work that was unveiled in February to improve the waste water network within the Glasgow area.

In the largest investment in the network since Victorian times, the upgrade will see the river water quality improve as well as the natural environment of the River Clyde and its tributaries, enabling the Greater Glasgow area to grow and develop, alleviate sewer flooding and deal with the effects of increased rainfall and climate change.


The work at Corkerhill commenced in August and is expected to be completed in November, and involves the installation of two new Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) with screening on land adjacent to the Corkerhill Road railway bridge. One of the new CSOs with screening will augment five existing CSOs - which do not have screening - and will screen waste water from those. The other new CSO with screening will replace an existing CSO, which also does not have screening.

CSOs are a feature of most existing sewerage systems where surface water, such as rainwater, from roofs, yards, roads and foul (sewage and trade) effluent flows are combined in one sewer.

With increasing rainfall, the combined sewer reaches its hydraulic capacity and a release mechanism is required in order to prevent flooding or inundation of areas (including domestic property and commercial premises) with dilute sewage. CSOs are designed to spill in heavy weather and allowed to do so under Scottish Environment Protection Agency regulations.

In addition to the above, the project also involves the upsizing of around 30 metres of waste water mains near the junction of Corkerhill Road and Mosspark Drive.

Work on the waste water main is due to start on about October 7 and last for approximately six weeks.
