The progress has been made in response to reports by Audit Scotland on Scottish roads maintained by local authorities in 2004, and more recently, in 2012.
At a meeting earlier this week, members of the Committee were informed of the audit work carried out by Audit Scotland in 2012, which focused on how each council had responded to recommendations contained in its report 'Maintaining Scotland's roads: a follow up report' (2011).
In response, the committee:
- noted the recommendations set out in Audit Scotland's report 'Maintaining Scotland's roads: an audit update on council's progress' (May 2013)
- welcomed the progress that Highland has made in relation to asset management planning, performance management and collaborative working.
Councillor Phillips said: "Our work from the result of these audits has brought about great results. This is the first time ever that Highland Council has allocated money to repair roads, based on where the roads most need fixing. Because we now have a robust asset management system, this also means that year-on-year we can monitor the trend in road conditions and act accordingly."
