The work will commence today (Monday 12 August) between the Whirlies Roundabout and Law Place Roundabout. The improvements programme is expected to last for four to five weeks.
It will include:
- full reconstruction of the northbound footway between Whirlies and Law Place roundabouts
- a Toucan crossing point (a pedestrian crossing that also allows bicycles to be ridden across) with a central refuge island will be created approximately 200m north of the Whirlies Roundabout
- the bus shelter on the northbound carriageway will be relocated approximately 50m to the north
- full resurfacing of the northbound carriageway between Whirlies and Law Place roundabout will also be carried out during the works
- all roadmarkings on Kingsway, Law Place Roundabout and Kingsgate Roundabout will be refreshed.
As a result of the scheme, lane closures will be in place for the majority of the works, while it will be necessary to close the Kingsway in both directions to complete the resurfacing works. This will take place over a weekend and more details will be announced nearer the time.
Councillor Chris Thompson, Chair of the Council's Enterprise Services Committee, said: "The level of work being carried out on the Kingsway shows our commitment to improving our roads and footways.
"I appreciate that the works are likely to cause some delays and apologise for that, but unfortunately improvement works of this nature cannot be carried out without some disruption.
"I would ask that all road users be aware of the closures that may be in place and also take note that they may change from week to week depending on what phase of the scheme is being worked on.
"It would also be a good idea for anyone using this stretch of the Kingsway to leave a little extra time for their journeys."
