A John Byrne mural, commissioned by the Festival City Theatres Trust for Edinburgh's King's Theatre dome has officially been unveiled.

The Council said the commission, 'All the World's a Stage', is painted on the 85m2 dome of the Viennese Baroque auditorium and is now a focal point for the theatre affectionately known as the 'Old Lady of Leven Street'.

Commissioned as part of a major restoration and refurbishment of the King's Theatre - funded in part by the City of Edinburgh Council - the artwork was painted over the course of five weeks, by a team led by John Byrne and artist Kevin O'Leary. The unveiling of the project also signifies the completion of a major refurbishment scheme of the facility. Designed and project managed by Rachel Simmonds, of Edinburgh architects Smith Scott Mullan Associates, the upgrade included luxurious new seating, new carpeting, a new ventilation system and a completely refreshed and restored interior decorative scheme, completed by award-winning architectural heritage and decorating firm Nevin of Edinburgh.


Appraising the commission work, Vice-Convener at the City of Edinburgh Council, Councillor Norma Austin Hart said: "This stunning design beautifully complements the recent refurbishment of the King's Theatre."
