Queens Cross Offers Apprenticeships

Glasgow's Queens Cross Housing Association has said it is to offer 12 new apprenticeship posts.

The posts will be for local young people aged between 16 and 24.

The apprenticeships on offer vary from construction, plumbing and joinery, to business administration.

Patricia Urquhart, Community Development Worker is responsible for the Association's employability initiatives.

She said: "We all know how difficult it can be for young people to get their first real work experience.

"Through our partnerships with construction company Carillion, our repairs contractor P&D Scotland and training organisations, TIGERS, we're delighted to have secured 12 apprenticeships for young people living in the Queens Cross Housing Association area."

Sean Byrne (18) from Ruchill is on the TIGERS scheme as a construction apprentice with Carillion. Discussing his role, he explained: "I've been with Carillion since last November. I've had the chance to try lots of different things like mono blocking, kerbing, slabbing and traffic management. It's a great opportunity and it feels good to have a job."

Under the partnership, Carillion Energy Services are working with the housing association to tackle fuel poverty and provide green energy solutions to tenants.

Queens Cross Housing Association will be holding an open day on Friday 9 August from 12 noon to 4pm in the Windsor Street Community Hall where those interested in an apprenticeship can find out more information.
