The proposed £29m project to replace Newbattle Community High School is set to reach a major milestone with elected members due to meet next week to consider a report on its options.
The report sets out a number of officer recommendations and summarises the results of an extensive public consultation process into the choices to be made in the project.
The final decisions on what will be provided at the new site for the school lie with elected members, who can agree or disagree with the recommendations made by council officials.
The project follows the local authority's successful bid to the Scottish Government for funding to replace the existing Newbattle Community High School.
Councillor Bob Constable, Leader of Midlothian Council, said: "Barely a week before we open the new Lasswade Centre's community wing, we're meeting to decide what should happen with a second high school replacement in Midlothian. That's a huge amount of investment - in excess of £65m - that's been secured for Midlothian and that's a great achievement in this recession.
"As we've said from the very start, we've listened to what people have told us and recognise completely that the situation in Lasswade however is different from the situation we have in Newtongrange, Gorebridge and Mayfield, and the other communities such as Moorfoot which are served by Newbattle Community High School.
"We recognise the passion and commitment we've heard from people in recent months. We've heard information about the likely lifespan of some of our buildings, and a lot of detail on the financial information."
The report will be discussed on Tuesday 25 June.
