Improvement works worth more than £2m are nearing completion in Dundee city centre.

The programme to create new landscaping, lighting, drainage and other improvements to the City Square was established to ensure there are areas of newly laid paving for graduation ceremonies taking place this week.

Tayside Contracts are carrying out the work which includes new paving, up-rated drainage, water and electrical supply, wall mounted lighting, hard and soft landscaping and the replacement of the Caird Hall steps and new and improved disabled access. The hard landscaping work is being completed and planters and seating have already started to arrive, while the fountains are being re-lined and the steps to Castle Street and Crichton Street are to be veneered.


Finishing touches to the redevelopment will also include replacing the existing canopies covering the top half of both sets of steps as well as new signage.

Lord Provost Bob Duncan said: "A great deal of work is going on elsewhere in the city, particularly in the Waterfront area, so we felt it was crucial that other prominent parts of Dundee are equally attractive for visitors and local people.

"City Square has always been a gathering place and with these improvements, I am sure that it will attract even more people who want to sit, chat, eat and enjoy the atmosphere.

"Improved drainage and work on waterproofing the roof of the underground garage also means that this contract will safeguard the square for future generations."
